The Making of Cool Air, The Disruption of Cool Air
Your car’s air conditioning system produces cool air using gas refrigerant under high pressure. Before cool air can enter the passenger area, it passes through the evaporator where heat is removed. The extracted heat transfers to the refrigerant. The gas is changed to liquid and moved to the condenser where it is cooled. Afterward, it moves to the orifice tube/expansion valve and returns to its gaseous state. A dryer/accumulator takes out moisture, allowing the refrigerant to go back to the evaporator to begin the cycle again. Since this is an efficient process, perhaps you’re wondering what could go wrong. Hopefully, with preventive maintenance, nothing will disrupt your flow of cool air. However, sometimes you’ll notice that your air isn’t as cool as it should be. This likely points to a lack of refrigerant because a small hole has developed somewhere in the system. Also, road trash/debris might block or puncture the condenser. If this occurs, your car can’t properly make the hot-cold exchange. Further, since fans help cool the condenser, your system also can’t accomplish the necessary heat exchange if those fans stop working. The compressor, too, is critical to AC function. If it fails, the system cannot cool the air. Another issue might be a stuck air blend door. This part allows for the mixing of hot and cold air to achieve the set temperature. If it becomes immobilized (most often after the AC has gone unused during the winter months), your car can’t reach your optimal comfort level. Finally, if a broken wire or other electrical problem strips your system of power, the AC won’t work at all.
