What is the Emissions Testing Process in Texas?

Today’s emission system is more complex and essential than ever. Emission control systems that work correctly will result in a cleaner environment and better vehicle performance. As a result, emissions testing determines the level of air pollutants emitted by your vehicle. Some states require annual inspections to measure your car’s emissions to ensure it isn’t causing smog or air pollution. In the state of Texas, two tests are available for an emissions inspection, and the model and year of your vehicle will determine which test your vehicle requires.

The OBDII test is used for vehicle models manufactured after 1996. This test uses data that has been previously collected in the car’s emissions computer system to determine your evaluation. For vehicles manufactured in 1995 or earlier, we use the ASM/TSI test. Because older vehicles lack onboard computers to collect emissions data, the car goes through this test, and the levels of emissions emitted by your vehicle while it is running are collected and measured. Regardless of which test, the results will be used to determine which repairs or adjustments are necessary to resolve any issues. Once the required repairs are complete, the owner can have the car re-inspected at no additional charge if the re-inspection occurs within 30 days of the first inspection.
